Cabo San Lucas lies at the southern tip of Baja California Sur, Mexico, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. One of the city’s landmarks is El Arco, also known as “Land’s End” or finis terrae, because there’s no land to the south until Antarctica.
In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know for your trip to Cabo San Lucas: when to go, how to get there, what to see, the best beaches, recommended hotels, and restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine.

Tourism and nightlife in Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas was the last stop on my Baja California Sur trip and honestly, maybe the one I enjoyed the least. Coming from peaceful spots like La Paz, Todos Santos, and Cerritos, landing in this kind of “Mexican Ibiza,” full of clubs, nightlife, booming music, and people trying to sell you anything, felt a bit overwhelming.
That’s by night. In the morning, however, the city seemed almost ghostly, slowly waking up.
Cabo attracts a lot of American tourism: families who stay in massive all-inclusive resorts, and young people, especially during Spring Break, who come here to party. The atmosphere is more festive and chaotic than traditional Mexican, so much so that people usually address you in English, and US dollars are practically the default currency.
That said, a little nightlife never hurt anyone, and the area does offer natural wonders just as stunning as the rest of Baja. You just need to look beyond first impressions.
Here are my tips for visiting Cabo San Lucas.

Best time to visit Cabo San Lucas
The weather in Cabo is generally pleasant year-round. High season runs from December to April, when the area becomes one of the world’s top whale-watching destinations.
Low season coincides with summer (June to October), when it’s hot and humid but the sea is warm and prices drop. I personally visited in July and, since I don’t mind the heat, I found it an excellent time to go.
How to get to Cabo San Lucas
There are no direct flights from Europe to Cabo San Lucas. You’ll need a stopover in Mexico City or in a US airport (in which case you’ll need an ESTA).
The closest airport is Los Cabos International Airport – SJD, located in San José del Cabo, about 40–60 minutes from Cabo San Lucas depending on traffic.
Once you land, you can either rent a car with [Discovercars] (my choice), get a public bus, or opt for a private transfer if you’re traveling with family or a group.

Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas: Must-See Attractions
Cabo San Lucas marina & downtown
The heart of the city is the Marina, a modern harbor lined with luxury yachts, sportfishing boats, and catamarans. Along the waterfront you’ll find restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and shopping malls. It’s lively both day and night: perfect for strolling, shopping, or simply admiring the boats.

In the historic downtown, the vibe changes: authentic streets, small local restaurants, art galleries, and Plaza Amelia Wilkes, the main square. Here you’ll also find the Natural history museum, showcasing Baja California Sur’s geology, flora, and fauna.
At night, this area becomes the nightlife hub with live music venues, international clubs, outdoor bars, and nightclubs open until dawn.
The Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco)
This iconic granite arch, sculpted by centuries of erosion, is Cabo’s most famous landmark. Known as Land’s End, it marks the exact spot where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez.
How to visit: You can only reach it by boat from the Marina or Médano Beach. I booked this convenient [tour on Get Your Guide] which included photo stops and an optional landing on Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach.

- Lover’s Beach (Sea of Cortez side): calm, clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
- Divorce Beach (Pacific side): strong waves and dangerous currents, great for a walk, but not safe for swimming.
If you want a longer experience, book a snorkeling tour around the Arch: the waters here are crystal clear and full of marine life.
Sunset is the best time for photos when the rocks glow orange. Many boat tours include sunset cocktails, one of the most romantic things to do in Cabo.

From December to March, Cabo is among the best whale-watching spots in the world. Humpbacks steal the show with their spectacular breaches and tail slaps, but you may also spot gray whales, orcas, and dolphins.
Some tours even offer a sighting guarantee (a free second trip if you don’t see whales).

Cabo Pulmo national park
About two hours northeast of Cabo lies Cabo Pulmo, a UNESCO-protected marine park home to one of the oldest living coral reefs in the Pacific (20,000 years old). Jacques Cousteau famously called it “the Aquarium of the World.”
Things to Do in Cabo Pulmo: Snorkeling and scuba diving are the main activities. You’ll find tropical fish, sea turtles, sea lions, reef sharks (harmless), bull sharks, hammerheads in deeper waters, and giant manta rays. A paradise for divers!

Day trip to San José del Cabo
Just 30–40 minutes away, San José del Cabo is the quieter, more traditional side of Los Cabos. Its historic center has colonial charm, tree-lined plazas, an 18th-century mission, cobblestone streets, art galleries, and boutique shops.

From November to June, every Thursday evening the Art walk takes over downtown with galleries open late, live music, and street art installations: a must if you’re in town. Even without it, San José offers a more authentic cultural experience compared to Cabo San Lucas.
Best beaches in Cabo San Lucas and surroundings
Not all Cabo beaches are swimmable due to strong currents, but here are the best ones:
- Playa El Médano – Main city beach (3 km long), lively and well-equipped with beach clubs, restaurants, water sports, and rentals.

- Lover’s Beach – Small, beautiful, only accessible by boat, with snorkeling on the calm side.
- Playa Chileno (Chileno Bay) – Blue flag beach, calm waters thanks to coral reef protection, excellent for snorkeling.
- Playa Santa María – Horseshoe-shaped bay, marine sanctuary, turquoise water, and stunning views from above.
