Before starting to plan your road trip in Italy, the first thing to do is make sure to drive a safe and efficient car.

Amalfi coast on the road

Certainly one of the most beautiful road trips in southern Italy, with a stunning panorama.

The Amalfi coast is a stretch of coast of extreme beauty, bathed by an intense blue sea and dotted with characteristic villages and great views.

Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Vietri sul mare, are some of those lovely villages.

If you decide to go on a road trip on the Amalfi Coast, my advice is to avoid the peak seasons (mid-august, especially), to avoid finding yourself stuck in the traffic.

Road trip around Garda Lake

Garda Lake

Among the road trips in northern Italy, one of the most interesting is the one around Lake Garda which will allow you to discover the most fascinating areas of the largest lake in Italy.

Following the “Gardesana” that runs alongside the lake, the landscape you will cross varies from hills with vines and olive trees to cypresses and limestone mountains.

Do not miss the beautiful Sirmione, Riva del Garda, Desenzano and Salò. Once arrived in Gardone, you can visit the Vittoriale, where Gabriele D’Annunzio lived, with its large park and bizarre collections of objects and furnishings.

The itinerary is perfect for those who love sports (cycling, surfing, kite surfing), outdoor life and even nightlife, given that the area of Lake Garda is full of bars, restaurants, clubs and discos.

Cinque Terre road trip

Italy road trips

The coast of the Cinque Terre, in Liguria, is one of the Italian excellences stormed every year by tourists from all over the world.

It is Unesco heritage and considered a rather chic area. Made up of several villages, among which you can travel by car or even by train, if you don’t feel like driving.

The coast is truly wonderful and the villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al mare will make you fall in love.

Road trip in Chianti, Tuscany

The Chianti area is one of the most loved in Tuscany and a beautiful idea for a road trip through Italy.

road trip Tuscany

Among vineyards and olive groves, hills and winding streets, you will pass through beautiful villages with a retro charm and you will be able to taste some of the best wines in the country as well as a tasty gastronomy.

Driving  through the hilly roads of Chianti with the scents and colors of the summer season, venturing through the country lanes that lead you to discover enchanting landscapes, has something magical.

The Chianti area is also full of cheap bed & breakfasts where you can sleep.

Dolomites on the road

The Dolomites are beautiful and traveling by car is a nice way to get to know them better.

Dolomites Italy

To visit the Dolomites by car you can start from the beautiful Bolzano and then reach the elegant Cortina d’Ampezzo passing through Ortisei, Selva di Val Gardena, Corvara in Alta Badia, passing through Brunico and San Candido.

Certainly the summer season is the most suitable for this tour of the Dolomites. You will be dazzled by the immensity of the landscapes, the high peaks and the green valleys.

I must say that although I am a lover of the sea, when I was in the Dolomites in Alta Badia in the summer, I actually discovered that I also have a thing for the mountain in the summer.

Basilicata on the road

One of the less known regions in Italy is Basilicata, in the south of the country.

In recent years, many tourists have visited Matera, which was the Italian capital of Italian culture in 2019. I too was there for the first time a couple of years ago.

Matera

Basilicata, however, is not only Matera and offers a territory that is still almost virgin and therefore irresistible.

Starting from Lauria, a beautiful medieval village on the hills, you arrive at the Pollino National Park, the largest in Italy, which is located on the border with Calabria and offers wonderful naturalistic panoramas.

You will then drive by car to Francavilla in Sinni and then San Costantino Albanese, where ancient Albanian populations moved in 1500 and where Albanian traditions and culture are still there.

You will then arrive in Senise and finally visit the medieval village of Craco, which after a serious landslide in 1963 became a ghost town, totally uninhabited.

From there you will return to Lauria for the end of your Basilicata road trip.

Umbria on the road

Umbria is such a beautiful region! I have been there several times and every single time time for me has been a lovely surprise.

A road trip in Umbria will allow you to discover a region sometimes underestimated but which in reality has nothing less than more well-known regions such as Tuscany.

To visit Umbria by car you have several options. If you also want to visit the main city of the region, my advice is to leave from Perugia and then continue towards Gubbio and Assisi.

Then visit the villages of Spoleto and Norcia, with their unmissable food excellence.

Don’t miss the naturalistic area of Valnerina, near Terni.

Here you will find excellent hospitality, interesting ancient villages, nature, waterfalls (the Marmore waterfalls are located here and are the most famous in Italy) and you can also eat very well!
